NEW YORK -- Steven Mnuchin is forming a group to buy TikTok from Chinese parent ByteDance, the former U.S. Treasury secretary said Thursday, as the popular short-video app comes under increasing pressure from lawmakers in Washington.

"It should be sold. It should be controlled by a U.S. business," Mnuchin said in an interview on CNBC. "It's a great company. It would be terrible if it would shut down lots of users."
