TOKYO -- Japan's Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank will partner with U.S.-based venture capital firm Carbide Ventures to support Japanese startups, working toward offering products accessible to retail investors.

Hurdles for individuals to invest in venture capital funds tend to be high, due to their frequently low liquidity, large minimum investment requirements and a limited availability of information.
