KOBE, Japan -- Weipa, a Chinese seasoning brand found in kitchens across Japan, has created an internet buzz with a new product line catering to vegans.

Vegan Weipa, which first went on sale in April, is the first seasoning paste to win certification from the U.K.-based Vegan Society for not using any animal products or flavor enhancers. Although it sells at a nearly 30% markup from regular Weipa, retailers have struggled to keep up with demand.
