Even Japan's 'star student' bean sprouts feel inflation pinch

Producers caught between higher costs and customers refusing to pay more

TOKYO -- In Japan, certain foods like eggs and bean sprouts have earned the nickname "star students" for their unusually stable prices.

This has been a source of frustration for Shoji Hayashi, president of bean sprout producer Asahi Bussan. "Please don't call them that," Hayashi said.
