TOKYO -- Japanese companies are increasing their presence in meat and fish alternatives, ranking only behind the U.S. in the value of related patents in an industry expected to grow rapidly as the global population rises.

In cooperation with Tokyo-based research company Patent Result, Nikkei examined patents filed by companies and research institutions that are useful for developing alternative-protein products, giving each a score based on its value.
