OSAKA -- Japan-based doughnut chain Mister Donut is trying to break into Hong Kong's notoriously difficult market, looking to stand out among the myriad local bakeries by leveraging a diverse lineup that includes its iconic Pon de Ring mochi doughnuts.

Mister Donut's first location there opened on Oct. 26 to a long line in the basement of central Hong Kong's K11 Art Mall shopping center, selling 20 or so varieties. Within eight hours, the store had sold out of the more than 4,000 doughnuts prepared for the opening day.
