SAPPORO, Japan -- Seafood exports from Japan's northernmost main island of Hokkaido fell last year as China's import ban dragged on, and this year they will contend with the prospect of trade headwinds out of the U.S.

Hokkaido seafood exports totaled 56.7 billion yen ($364 million) last year, according to preliminary data released Friday by Japan Customs. That was down 32% from 2022, the year before the Chinese restrictions were imposed in response to plans to release treated wastewater from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the ocean.
