TOKYO/YAMAGUCHI, Japan -- As Japanese cuisine's popularity soars overseas, sake breweries are seeking to take advantage of the boom with local governments chipping in to promote the traditional drink as part of their unique history and culture.

Their work appears to be paying off. The volume of sake exports shipped last year was 90% higher than 10 years ago, buoyed by strong demand in the U.S. and China. Export value rose 6% on the year to 43.4 billion yen ($285 million).
