Fuji Media shares shrug off SMAP's breakup

TOKYO -- Despite the surprise announcement that massively popular Japanese boy band SMAP is breaking up, the stock price of Fuji Media Holdings, the broadcaster that airs the group's weekly TV show, rose to 1,294 yen Monday, up 0.9% from Friday.

According to market information provider Nikkei Quick News, investors are upbeat about the overall business environment for the broadcaster. In late July, Fuji announced that its net profit for the April-June quarter increased 60%. Moreover, on Friday, Japan's largest advertising agency, Dentsu, said its first-half net profit jumped 54%.
