GrabTaxi tightens clutch on Southeast Asia as competitors arrive

In the Philippines, GrabTaxi lends drivers money so they can buy smartphones to take bookings from customers.

MANILA -- GrabTaxi, an Internet-based cab-hailing company, dominates in Southeast Asia. It is hoping to keep things that way by offering expanded and localized services.

     Uber Technologies, its U.S. counterpart that operates in some 60 countries, is also gaining ground in the region.
