Hitachi to buy Mitsubishi Electric's particle therapy business

Acquisition targets rising overseas demand for advanced cancer treatment systems

Hitachi's particle cancer therapy system is used at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in the U.S. state of Texas.

TOKYO -- Hitachi will acquire Mitsubishi Electric's particle therapy equipment business as it seeks to tap growing demand abroad for advanced cancer treatment systems.

The business, which encompasses development, production, sales and maintenance, will be transferred to Hitachi to form a new organization in April, according to an announcement Thursday.
