IndieBio, a San Francisco-based biotech accelerator, is bringing the biohacker movement to life. In the words of co-founder Ryan Bethencourt: "It was the right time to start a commercial biotech accelerator focused on biology as a technology, not just on the biomedical vertical."
IndieBio was founded in late 2014 by Arvind Gupta, Ron Shigeta and Bethencourt, backed by SOSV, an accelerator venture capital fund with $250 million in assets under management. Alongside IndieBio, Ireland-based SOSV is also backing vertical accelerators (i.e., organizations focused on helping startups in a particular industry) with a strong presence in Asia. Examples include hardware-focused HAX Accelerator in Shenzhen, MOX, a mobile-only accelerator in Taipei and Chinaccelerator in Shanghai.
