TOKYO -- Japanese nonlife insurers are expanding their products and services to help reduce food loss as concerns grow regarding food waste in the country.

In the coming months, Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance and Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance are each set to launch plans to cover the costs of reselling food items rejected due to technical factors, such as delayed deliveries. Products that are still good to consume are often discarded due to damage to packaging or containers during transport, or delivery delays caused by extreme weather events, such as heavy snow.
