Japan Display's new factory sits idle, awaits demand

Japan Display has completed this smartphone LCD factory in Ishikawa Prefecture, but the start date is undecided.

TOKYO -- Japan Display celebrated the completion of its new smartphone liquid crystal display factory Tuesday, but when the plant will begin operations is yet to be decided.

The company announced plans to build the factory in the Ishikawa Prefecture city of Hakusan back in March 2015. Japan Display received most of the plant's 170 billion yen ($1.63 billion currently) cost from Apple as advance payment used to cover expenses including manufacturing equipment and construction, and the display maker was aiming for a May 2016 start date.
