Japan Inc. sees bigger rewards as mother of inventions

Mitsubishi Electric, Toyota bolster incentives to entice, retain global talent

A patent for a flying car was submitted by Toyota Motor's U.S. arm.

TOKYO -- Mitsubishi Electric, Toyota Motor and other Japanese companies are sweetening their financial incentives for employees who devise patent-worthy creations on the job.

Starting in April, Mitsubishi Electric staffers will qualify for a bonus totaling nearly 100,000 yen ($881) upon applying for and receiving a patent -- double the current amount.
