Japan food wholesalers get fresh in Thailand

Locals gather around a table where representatives from Tokyo's Tsukiji wholesale market show off their fish-cutting techniques at an event to promote Japanese fresh food at Talaad Thai, Thailand's biggest wholesale market in mid-September.

BANGKOK -- The aroma of broiling fish wafted through an area of Talaad Thai, Thailand's largest wholesale market, on a mid-September weekend, drawing a crowd of people to its source. There, they gathered to watch Pacific saury being broiled and salted.

Curious locals looked on and snapped photos with their smartphones as this seasonal Japanese treat -- sanma no shioyaki -- was being prepared. And when the fish was ready to eat, they tucked into the strange new dish with relish.
