Japan travel agencies targeting Chinese tourists on their turf

JTB, Kinki Nippon eye sale of Japan packages

Japanese travel agencies, previously barred from selling tours to Chinese consumers, hope to tap into Asia's largest market.

TOKYO -- Major Japanese travel agencies are stepping up efforts in China to attract more tourists to Japan, taking advantage of greater access to the Chinese market.

Only Chinese travel agencies had been permitted to sell tours to Chinese consumers until recently, with overseas agencies limited to offering in-country tours to visitors from outside China. JTB received clearance in 2011 to open a Beijing site as restrictions were loosened.
