Japanese education company Benesse preps for overseas growth

Shrinking domestic market pushes companies toward Asian neighbors

Benesse Holdings plans to start offering a distance learning program for preschoolers in Indonesia next summer.

TOKYO -- Japanese educational service provider Benesse Holdings is preparing to offer a distance learning program for preschoolers in Southeast Asia, seeking expansion in other Asian countries amid the low birthrate at home.

The program for teaching social basics such as how to dress and get along with friends using picture books, animation and educational toys will debut nationwide in Indonesia in July 2018. The company may bring it to the Philippines and Malaysia as well.
