TOKYO -- More people went to watch a movie in Japan last year than at any time in the past 42 years. Led by the megahit "Your Name," animated films accounted for seven of the top 10 highest grossing movies.

According to the Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan, 180.2 million cinema tickets were sold in 2016, an 8.1% increase year on year. It was the first time since 1974 that the figure topped 180 million.
