Japanese startup, Indian students team to develop AI

ExaIntelligence combats labor shortage through partnership with university

MUMBAI -- Japanese startup ExaIntelligence will research industrial applications for artificial intelligence with students from India's Andhra University, drawing upon the South Asian country's science and engineering talent as Japan faces labor shortages.

The company and the university, based in India's southeastern state of Andhra Pradesh, signed a partnership Tuesday. Andhra University's computer science program is highly regarded in India.

ExaIntelligence will include the students in AI development projects, when permitted by the client. The startup also may hire the students as data scientists to conduct analysis and work with tools in areas such as machine learning.

Though the company also partners with Japan's Kyoto University and Waseda University, the country's information technology industry faces a scarcity of skilled workers. The current shortage of 15,000 people is estimated to reach nearly 50,000 by 2020, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry says.

ExaIntelligence was founded in February 2016 by Makoto Haruta, the former chairman of Japanese internet company DeNA. The venture, which hires AI engineers mainly from institutions such as Kyoto University and Osaka University, operates a research and development hub in Kyoto. The startup has taken on roughly 10 projects from major companies in Kyoto as well as businesses related to automobiles in Nagoya.
