Lawson beats Japan convenience store rivals to Nanjing

Retailer planning to open 300 stores in historically sensitive area

TOKYO -- Lawson is extending its reach in China as part of a plan to have 3,000 locations in the country by 2020.

On Monday, Lawson will become the first Japanese convenience store chain to arrive in Nanjing, capital of the eastern province of Jiangsu. It will open five stores on that day with plans to expand to more than 300 stores in the city in three to five years.
