SYDNEY -- A packed Australian pub is rarely quiet. But last week, the front bar at the Westland Hotel Motel in the South Australian town of Whyalla was an exception, as Peter Malinauskas, the state's premier, spoke to some 200 steelworkers about the future of the 83-year-old local plant.
"For five minutes, you could have heard a pin drop," said Garry Henderson, acting secretary of the South Australia branch of the Australian Workers' Union.
