SYDNEY -- Nickel and lithium producers in Australia are halting or slowing operations amid a persistent price slump, with the government saying it plans to meet with companies to discuss possible support measures for the industry.

Nickel and lithium are key ingredients in electric vehicle batteries, but oversupply and questions about the strength of global demand for EVs have sharply pushed down prices in recent months.
