SYDNEY -- A joint effort by some of Australia's largest companies to future-proof the country's most lucrative export industry amid the global push to decarbonize has taken a step forward with a site selected for an electric smelting furnace.

Iron ore giants BHP and Rio Tinto and Australian steel manufacturer BlueScope joined forces earlier this year to develop the pilot project, which will seek to prove that iron ore from the Pilbara region can be turned into steel with renewable energy and without the need for a traditional coal-fired blast furnace.
