TOKYO -- China's copper imports in August dropped by 12.3% from the previous year, preliminary customs data showed on Tuesday, underscoring the weak demand in the world's largest consumer that is weighing on global prices.

Imports of unwrought copper and copper products came to 415,000 tonnes, down from the previous year's 473,000 tonnes and dropping for the third consecutive month. The decline is yet another sign of China's sluggish economy, particularly in fields such as the property sector and manufacturing.
