Chinese crude steel output hit record in January-June

Producers worldwide fear return of oversupply

TOKYO -- China produced a record amount of crude steel in the first half of this year amid brisk investments in real estate and public works.

But observers around the world are increasingly worried that a slowdown in the Chinese economy and import restrictions by the U.S. could flood the global market with surplus steel products.
