TOKYO -- Japan's 5 yen coin is becoming more expensive to produce amid higher materials prices and an unfavorable exchange rate, raising the possibility that the per-coin production cost will eventually surpass its face value.

The 5 yen coin weighs 3.75 grams and is made from a brass alloy of 60% to 70% copper and 30% to 40% zinc.
