TOKYO -- Nippon Steel is finalizing plans to appoint Executive Vice President Tadashi Imai as president in April, choosing its head of green transformation development as the company intensifies efforts to decarbonize and expand abroad.

Imai, a career technician, leads the steelmaker's electric arc furnace project, which is crucial to replacing conventional blast furnaces and lowering emissions in a carbon-intensive industry. He has experience on the production floor, including as chief of the company's Nagoya steelworks in central Japan.
