CANBERRA -- Rio Tinto on Monday said that it has approached U.S and Australia-listed Arcadium Lithium about a potential takeover bid, highlighting the Anglo-Australian mining giant's enthusiasm for the key battery material.

Rio has "made an approach to Arcadium Lithium regarding a potential acquisition of Arcadium Lithium by Rio Tinto," Rio said in a statement. "The approach is non-binding and there is no certainty that any transaction will be agreed to or will proceed."
