TOKYO -- The Japanese yen strengthened on Wednesday afternoon after stronger-than-expected wage growth for December raised investor expectations of a rate hike by the central bank later this year.

The yen appreciated to 152.84 to the dollar, up around 1.6% as of 6:23 p.m., its strongest level since Dec. 13.
