SHANGHAI -- Chinese stocks are teetering on the brink of a psychologically important level as they give up gains amid concerns about the outlook for consumer spending.

The Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.4% to end Thursday at 3,005. It has not closed below 3,000 since March 27.
