TOKYO -- The Tokyo Stock Exchange began adding 30 more minutes to its daily trading sessions on Tuesday, but activity on the bourse was unusually muted during the first day, suggesting room for further reforms to boost its global competitiveness.

Under the new extension, the TSE's trading hours now run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. But trading volume on its Prime market stood at 4.05 trillion yen ($26.6 billion) on Tuesday, well below the daily average of 4.5 trillion yen so far this year.
