Japanese companies' M&A behind lower yen

TOKYO -- Japanese companies made a near-record level of overseas direct investment in 2013, despite expectations of a decrease in line with the yen's depreciation. Global expansion through mergers and acquisitions, which often entails yen selling and dollar buying, is acting as a downward pressure on the yen.
