NEW YORK -- Shares in Chinese self-driving startup WeRide ended their fist day of trading up 6.7% on the Nasdaq composite Friday, following an initial public offering that generated $440.5 million for the company along with private placement. 

The shares surged more than 20% shortly after trading began, showing a strong investor appetite for Chinese companies. It closed at $16.55.
