TOKYO -- Investors in Japan’s markets are paying close attention to who will be elected as the next leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) on Friday, as that person will likely become the next prime minister.

The LDP leadership race has narrowed to three contenders: former environment minister Shinjiro Koizumi; Shigeru Ishiba, who has unsuccessfully run for the top job multiple times; and Sanae Takaichi, who has a shot at becoming the first female prime minister.
