Japan's Nikkei average tops 33-year high thanks to strong earnings

Weaker yen and reforms in corporate governance also boost stocks

TOKYO -- Japan's benchmark Nikkei Stock Average reached a new 33-year high on Monday morning as the stock market continues this year's solid performance.

The average was at 33,853.46 as of 9:25 a.m., up 0.80% compared with Friday's closing, following a strong earnings season. It was later pushed down by profit-taking and ended the morning session at 33,562.41, down 0.07% from Friday.
