Malaysia, Singapore shares fall amid Asian equities rout

Asian markets start year on feeble note as Chinese manufacturing data weigh

KUALA LUMPUR (Nikkei Markets) -- Malaysia and Singapore shares fell on the first day of this year's trading amid spill-over from sharp decline in other markets in Asia following data indicating weakening manufacturing activities in China.

The FBM KLCI ended 1.3% lower at 1668.11. Sime Darby Plantation was the biggest loser in the Malaysian index after declining 4.4%. The Straits Times Index closed down 1% at 3038.89 as Jardine Matheson Holdings fell 2.9%.
