SYDNEY -- Frustrated by surging prices in the Australian housing market, more people across the country are moving into so-called granny flats that share a property with private homes.

Andrew, a 30-something in the pharmaceutical sector, recently gave Nikkei a tour of his detached unit right next to his family home in suburban Sydney. This granny flat contains a dining room, a study and a bedroom, and lets Andrew stay near relatives while maintaining an independent lifestyle.
