HONG KONG (Nikkei Markets) -- Hong Kong shares ended little changed Monday, with the benchmark equity gauge failing to stay above 28,000 as a fall in heavyweight Tencent Holdings and Chinese carmakers eroded a chunk of its intraday gains.
The Hang Seng Index rose less than 0.1% to 27,863.29 by the close after straddling the 28,000-level earlier. At one point, it had climbed as much as 0.8%. Bank of Communications, whose half-yearly results beat market expectations last week, added 1.3% while larger rival Bank of China (BOC) increased 0.7%. Hong Kong lender Bank of East Asia added 1.9% following a near tripling of its first-half profit.
