Less-than-likely development could give equities a boost

TOKYO -- The New Year's party has apparently ended for investors in Japanese market as they worry about American protectionism. They should nevertheless bear in mind that a shocker does not always push the market down but can lift stocks as well.

"The Trump rally is almost over," a trader at a major brokerage said Friday after the U.S. president-elect slammed Toyota Motor on Twitter over a planned Mexican factory.
