Market Scramble: Lifting barbells at a time of volatility

TOKYO -- Changes in the market climate since a key Bank of Japan announcement last month are prompting many institutional investors in Tokyo shares to hedge risks by preparing for two opposite scenarios -- a so-called barbell strategy common in bond trading.

The Nikkei Stock Average slid 273 points Tuesday to close at 16,596 as the yen strengthened, belying the view that the Japanese currency might hold less sway over share prices than before.
