Market scramble: Efficiency-minded stocks draw foreigners

Companies addressing business challenges attractive in directionless market

TOKYO -- Amid a rather directionless Tokyo market, some foreign investors are snapping up shares in companies providing labor-saving and other solutions for businesses that are relatively resilient to outside factors.

The Nikkei Stock Average rebounded on Wednesday after two sessions of decline. The index jumped more than 300 points at one point, then slackened to end at 19,057, up 269.
