TOKYO -- The Tokyo Stock Exchange is on a quest to increase its appeal and competitiveness through a series of reforms as it seeks to broaden its investor base and encourage "healthier" transactions.

The market restructuring comes on the back of Japan's declining population and cash-loving society where stock trading has carried a negative stigma for decades.
