TOKYO -- Brazilian chemical company Braskem is considering plans for Japan's first full-scale production of plant-based plastics, Nikkei has learned, a move that could help cut one of the country's biggest sources of carbon dioxide emissions.

The project would produce polyethylene -- used in utensils and single-use bags -- entirely from plant matter.
