TOKYO -- With tensions between the U.S. and Russia casting a shadow over the titanium supply chain, Japanese producers are positioning themselves as reliable sources of the industrially crucial metal.

Titanium weighs 60% as much as steel by volume but is about twice as strong, giving it a wide range of applications, from aircraft to bone implants. The ore is first converted into titanium sponge, which is processed further into different titanium products.
