TOKYO -- Japan's Asahi Kasei will withdraw from a plastic raw materials joint venture in Thailand with a group member of state oil and gas company PTT under plans announced Friday, looking to shutter unprofitable operations.

Production at PTT Asahi Chemical was halted at the end of October, and sales will continue through the end of December. The 50-50 joint venture produces acrylonitrile, a chemical used to make durable ABS resin for manufacturing.
