TOKYO -- Nippon Steel's global strategy is at a crossroads as the Japanese steelmaker looks to establish start-to-finish local production in the target markets of the U.S., India and Southeast Asia.

Its proposed acquisition of U.S. Steel and planned construction of blast furnaces in India are crucial pieces of this grand plan to pull away from rivals like South Korea's POSCO.
