BANGKOK -- Banpu, Southeast Asia's biggest coal mining company, plans to enter Thailand's growing electric vehicle market, producing lithium-ion batteries for Chinese EV makers.

The company is expected to start making the batteries by the first quarter of 2024, said Banpu CEO Somruedee Chaimongkol in an interview with Nikkei Asia. She made the comment after the company acquired in October a 40% stake in battery manufacturer Svolt Energy Technology through its subsidiary Banpu Next. Batteries will be supplied to key EV makers in Thailand.
