TOKYO -- The Pokemon franchise, which started as a computer game and has expanded to anime and character goods, has become one of Japan's highest-profile intellectual properties. That keeps Susumu Fukunaga busy as he travels across Asia launching IP business projects.

When the Pokemon Center opened at Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Taipei Xinyi Place in Taiwan's capital in December 2023, customers flocked to the department store to snap up commemorative items. Fukunaga, who is corporate officer of The Pokemon Co., had told store officials that a lot of people would come, but the crowd was even larger than they had expected.
