J-pop idol Tomohisa Yamashita relishes reaching global audience

Former teen idol breaks mold of Japan's insular pop idol business

Tomohisa Yamashita broke into show business in 1996 at the age of 11. Since the release his first CD in 2003, he has appeared in dramas and pursued a career as a solo singing artist.

TOKYO -- Singer and actor Tomohisa Yamashita has been a fixture on stage and screen in Japan for more than a quarter century, breaking into show business at just 11 years old in 1996. Now he's looking to break new ground.

"My next drama will have just one scene that requires working out, but I know how important such a scene is to the entire story. To be honest, I want to run away, but I have no choice but to do it as I came all the way here," Yamashita, now 36, said in an online interview with Nikkei in December.
